SCOTUS BEGINS NEW TERM THAT WILL DECIDE FATE OF ACA. In another clear reminder of what’s at stake in November, the Supreme Court begins a new term that will decide the fate of the Affordable Care Act and protections for the millions of Americans with pre-existing conditions. This term, the Supreme Court is preparing to hear oral arguments in the Republican lawsuit that would kick an estimated 20 million Americans off their health insurance, end Medicaid expansion for at least 12 million people, and cut other health care benefits while giving the richest 0.1% a massive tax windfall. Reminder: Senate Republican incumbents and candidates are on record either supporting or refusing to oppose this lawsuit and are in favor of gutting these core health care protections. And in the middle of a pandemic that has left millions of Americans unemployed and newly uninsured, Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans are furiously rushing to fill the Supreme Court vacancy with a nominee hostile to the Affordable Care Act, further jeopardizing the popular health care law.
ANOTHER THREE DEBATES, ANOTHER THREE CLEAR DEMOCRATIC VICTORIES. This weekend, three more Democratic candidates walked off debate stages as the clear winners. John Hickenlooper, Theresa Greenfield, and Jaime Harrison all delivered strong performances and held incumbent Senators Cory Gardner, Joni Ernst, and Lindsey Graham accountable for their failed leadership in Washington and their toxic records attacking access to quality and affordable health care.
Take a look at the coverage of these strong Democratic debate performances:
CEDAR RAPIDS GAZETTE ENDORSEMENT: “IT’S TIME FOR A NEW VOICE IN THE SENATE, THAT VOICE IS THERESA GREENFIELD.” The Cedar Rapids Gazette’s Editorial Board endorsed Theresa Greenfield for U.S. Senate in Iowa, citing Theresa’s ability to “work in a bipartisan manner to aid Iowans” and “end an era of partisan rancor” to put Iowans first. While noting that Theresa is “running to rebuild the social safety net and strengthen the Affordable Care Act,” the Editorial Board called out the incumbent she’s challenging, writing: “during Ernst’s time in the Senate, we’ve seen continued dysfunctional government, problems ignored and very little of the change, or squealing, Ernst promised.” Read why the Gazette thinks Theresa is the right choice for Iowa here → Cedar Rapids Gazette: The Gazette’s endorsements for Iowa’s 2020 U.S. House and Senate races
AURORA’S SENTINEL COLORADO ENDORSEMENT: “WE NEED HICKENLOOPER IN THE SENATE.” Aurora’s Sentinel Colorado Editorial Board enthusiastically endorsed former Governor John Hickenlooper for U.S. Senate because he is “a trusted champion for all of Colorado.” The Editorial Board heaped praise on Hickenlooper, writing that the “former governor has proven himself to be a thoughtful, pragmatic and steady leader” and “an honest and selfless public servant.” In stark contrast, the Editorial Board eviscerated incumbent Senator Cory Gardner, calling the vulnerable incumbent out for being “one of President Donald Trump’s most reliable allies,” repeatedly backing “Trump’s Republican Party when it was wildly wrong,” and consistently offering “only double-talk when confronted.” In their own words: “Republican Cory Gardner is ending his first term in the Senate just like he began it, as a fraud.” Sentinel Colorado: EDITORIAL: Colorado knows who Gardner really is, and that we need Hickenlooper in the Senate
DAINES CAUGHT IN PAY TO PLAY: INFLUX OF CAMPAIGN CASH AFTER VOTE TO EXTEND PROGRAM “RAMPANT WITH FRAUD.” A bombshell new report reveals how Senator Steve Daines voted to extend an investor visa program that was “rampant” with fraud after meeting with a major beneficiary of the program. At the invitation of a private equity firm, Daines met with an investor and offered “maximum support and assistance” for Chinese investment in Montana. Daines then voted for a clean extension of the EB-5 program without any reforms – despite bipartisan concerns about the program being wrought with “fraud, securities violations, money laundering, investor exploitation and failed projects.” Just two days after Daines’ vote to extend the program, executives at the private equity firm donated nearly $20,000 to his campaign. This latest report is yet another example of Daines’ troubling pattern of looking out for the corporate allies who bankroll his campaigns, not hardworking Montanans. GRAHAM PHOTOGRAPHED WITH KNOWN LEADER OF WHITE NATIONALIST GROUP. Just days after President Trump failed to condemn the white nationalist group Proud Boys, a photograph of Senator Lindsey Graham smiling with a known member and organizer of the hate group has surfaced. When asked for comment on the photo, Senator Graham’s office has yet to respond. The Grio: Graham photographed with leader of white nationalist group Proud Boys
CORNYN IRRESPONSIBLY SPREADS MISINFORMATION ON CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC. Senator John Cornyn took to Twitter on Saturday where he irresponsibly shared dangerous misinformation about the public health effectiveness of masks during this surging pandemic. Despite the fact that top scientists say that wearing a mask is one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of COVID-19, Cornyn shared an article questioning the science. The reckless tweet isn’t the first time Cornyn has failed to take the pandemic seriously, demonstrating just how urgently Texas needs MJ Hegar’s new leadership in the Senate.
