DSCC Statement on GOP Anxiety Over Blackburn

Today Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesman David Bergstein released the following statement:

“Republicans raised concerns over Congresswoman Blackburn because they know she is out of touch with Tennessee. Their public display of anxiety has not only underscored her vulnerabilities but revealed a point of agreement between Democrats and Republicans: Congresswoman Blackburn is not fit to represent Tennessee in the U.S. Senate.”

See for yourself:

Politico: “A faction of Republicans in Tennessee and Washington are worried that the favorite for the Republican Senate nomination, Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), could lose a general election — and with it the Republican Senate majority.”

  • “Former Tennessee Republican Gov. Don Sundquist was blunt when asked about Blackburn: “You can say on the record I’m not supporting her”
  • “An internal poll taken in late January shows former Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen narrowly edging out Blackburn in a hypothetical match-up… The poll, conducted by Glen Bolger of Public Opinion Strategies for a Tennessee business group and obtained by POLITICO, shows Bredesen up 47 to 45, despite a sample that was overweighted with Republicans.”
  • “The distaste for Blackburn in some parts of the party is driving the campaign to recruit Corker to get back in. Those Republicans argue that she could blow a winnable race, pointing to Bredesen’s coalitions of Republican supporters when he won two gubernatorial races.”

The Tennessean: “Ingram, a Corker ally who has encouraged the senator to seek a third term, said an analysis of the race suggests that a Blackburn nomination on the Republican side could be Bredesen’s ‘best…path as a Democrat in a very Republican state.’”

MSNBC: “Marsha Blackburn…an unabashed firebrand that some Republicans fear could turn off more moderate voters…now there’s concern she could cost Republican’s their seat amid reports Corker could run again.”
