“Act of Desperation” From Unelected Senator Trailing in Polls, Millions Behind in Fundraising

Unelected Senator Martha McSally was caught on tape asking supporters to “fast a meal” so they can donate to her campaign because she is trailing badly in fundraising to Navy combat veteran and retired NASA astronaut Mark Kelly. A GOP operative called McSally’s tone-deaf request an “act of desperation” that came as McSally is on a month-long recess even while Republicans in the Senate continue to block a full extension of unemployment relief, additional coronavirus relief for state and local governments and delay emergency funding for the Postal Service.

“McSally is also behind in fundraising and now she’s telling her supporters that they could come up with more campaign cash to donate if they just ‘fast a meal.’…

McSally made this pitch to her supporters in an effort to raise more cash: ‘We’re doing our part to catch up, you know, to get our message out. But it takes resources. So, if anybody can give, I’m not ashamed to ask, to invest. If you can give one dollar, five dollars, if you can fast a meal and give what that would be.’ …

Republican businesswoman Christine Jones is a veteran of tough campaigns…: ‘It does feel like it’s a little bit of an act of desperation.’”
