GOP Summer of Chaos: Infighting Continues to Escalate in GOP Senate Primaries

Last week, Senate Republicans’ “intraparty rifts that defined the 2022 cycle and contributed to the GOP’s loss[es]” were once again on full display in races across the map. New reporting highlights that “trouble looms for [the] Senate GOP” as candidates are “creating headaches for GOP leaders.”

• In Montana, Matt Rosendale continues taking “notable potshots” at Tim Sheehy, and is “creating headaches for GOP leaders” as he threatens to “scuttl[e] plans by GOP establishment.” Additionally, nearly 40 Montana Republicans endorsed Rosendale’s potential candidacy, while Rosendale attacked Sheehy and the NRSC, stating “the voters of Montana will make the choice in the election, ‘not Mitch McConnell and the DC cartel.’” 

• In Ohio, The Cook Political Report detailed how the fallout from Issue One’s defeat is continuing to create problems for Frank LaRose, writing that “strategists have been baffled by LaRose’s strategy,” with one national Republican strategist saying “LaRose has had a really rough couple of weeks.” Moreno and Dolan have lept to attack LaRose, with Moreno stating it was a “preview of what would happen with Frank LaRose at the top of the ticket in 2024.”

• In Nevada, Inside Elections wrote “one of the more fractious Senate GOP primary battles in 2024” continues “heating up.” Jeffrey Gunter leapt on a report from CNN exposing Brown’s PAC to coin Brown “Scam Brown.” Brown is facing additional attacks from Gunter, who called him “Mitch McConnell’s puppet” and a “serial election loser” who is “trying to dance around the idea of Donald Trump.”
