ICYMI: DSCC Chair Sen. Gary Peters Discusses Defending and Expanding Democrats’ Senate Majority in 2024

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

MSNBC, The Last Word With Lawrence O’Donnell
December 26, 2023

Watch:

  • Sen. Peters: It’s absolutely critical, as it was last cycle for us to hold the majority and we didn’t just hold the majority in the midterm, we actually expanded it. We made history, the first time since 1934. And this cycle is every bit as important. We have to hold it. Democracy is on the ballot, the future of this country is on the ballot.
  • Sen. Peters: The thing about a democracy is that it is relatively fragile. And the only way that we have a robust democracy is you have to have people engaged, they have to be involved. They have to make sure they vote, they have to make sure their voices are heard. And we know the forces against that democracy are strong, particularly with who will likely be the Republican nominee for president. We know that he is a real threat to democracy and that’s why we need to have a Democratic majority in the Senate.
  • Sen. Peters: Our Senate candidates are going to be running as the person that will represent that state in the United States Senate. […] They’ll be talking about what they have accomplished, what they plan to do in the future and there’s going to be a very, very clear contrast between the Republican opponent and our incumbents. And that contrast will make a difference in the election.

  • Sen. Peters: We think there are opportunities for us on the offense. Certainly, Texas is an opportunity for us, Florida is an opportunity for us. We think we’re going to have really great candidates there and the contrast between what are basically not real popular Republican incumbents in those states gives us a real opportunity to pick up a couple states.
