ICYMI: DSCC Spokesperson Nora Keefe Discusses How Abortion is on The Ballot in 2024 Senate Races

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

SiriusXM POTUS Politics: The Laura Coates Show
December 18, 2023

  • Nora Keefe: Democrats are full throated in their support for a woman being able to make their own health care decisions. But across the Senate battlegrounds, Republican candidates are already on the record and on tape touting dangerous policies like a national abortion ban without exceptions… They might not want to talk about it now that it’s in the news and they know that they are on the wrong side of voters on this issue, but … Democrats will make sure that voters know where Republicans stand on this issue.
  • Laura Coates: Talk about Florida, because Rick Scott, the Senator down there, had supported a six week abortion ban saying quote, “I am 100% pro life and if I was still governor, I would sign this bill.” He had co-sponsored a national abortion ban back in 2021. There’s now a petition that’s going to be on the ballot this coming November. What is it about?
  • Nora Keefe: It looks like there will be a ballot measure to protect the right to abortion in Florida. Florida is one of Democrats’ pick-up opportunities this cycle. We have a great candidate running for Senate, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, and she is going to take Rick Scott’s feet to the fire as we head into 2024. Florida is a state in which abortion has not been litigated in the past, and we’ve seen in races across the country how the issue of abortion brings people out to vote who have not voted before. So I think there’s a really ripe opportunity in Florida both with this ballot measure to protect the right to abortion and also to elect Debbie Mucarsel-Powell to the Senate.
  • Laura Coates: A survey recently conducted in Senate battleground states seemed to demonstrate that voters are concerned about the potential for a national abortion ban or about abortion rights remaining a state issue. Are Democrats advantaged by [this]?
  • Nora Keefe: Definitely. We see the issue of abortion being a motivator for voters. The poll that you mentioned…shows how abortion rights remain a relevant and salient issue as voters make their decision as to who represents them in federal office. …Across the map — in Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — we have Republican candidates who are on the record, who want to take that right away. And that is definitely something we will be litigating in 2024.
