IN THE BATTLEGROUNDS: As SCOTUS Hears Mississippi Abortion Ban Case, Democrats Call Out Republicans & Highlight Stakes of 2022

With the Supreme Court hearing oral arguments on Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban — a case that could overturn Roe v. Wade — Democrats across Senate battleground states are highlighting the stakes of the midterms elections and calling out Republicans for their efforts to strip away critical health care coverage from women and families.

  • In Arizona, the ADP blasted the entire Republican Senate primary field for their anti-choice agenda while highlighting how Arizonans can rely on leaders like Senator Mark Kelly to protect a woman’s right to make her own health care choices.

“The GOP Senate primary candidates’ support for these heinous laws puts them out of touch and out of step. Thankfully, Arizonans know they can count on Senator Kelly to always defend access to reproductive care.”

  • In Florida, FDP Executive Director Marcus L. Dixon released a statement calling out Rubio for his long anti-choice record, which includes supporting anti-choice Supreme Court justices and opposing abortion in all circumstances with no exceptions.

“Marco Rubio has long opposed women’s rights to make their own health care decisions, and worked to put anti-choice Justices on the Supreme Court. With decades of precedent and access to reproductive health care for millions in danger, it’s Rubio’s actions that have helped put reproductive rights at risk.”

  • In Georgia, Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Chair of the DPG, issued a statement reminding voters that Republicans like Herschel Walker are supporting this dangerous effort to undermine Roe v. Wade.

“Georgia Republicans vying to be at the top of the ticket next year, from Brian Kemp to Herschel Walker, are supporting this dangerous effort to undermine Roe v. Wade and strip away the rights of individuals and families to make their personal health care decisions.”

  • In Nevada, Nevada Democratic Victory called out Adam on his long anti-choice record, and for dodging reporter questions on his support for overturning Roe v. Wade and undermining reproductive rights.

“Adam Laxalt knows his anti-choice stance is a major political liability and has tried to avoid talking about his anti-choice agenda outside of Republican events but he can’t run from his long record opposing women’s reproductive rights.”

  • In New Hampshire, NHDP Senior Advisor Senator Melanie Levesque issued a statement underscoring the importance of electing Democrats up and down the ballot in order to defend reproductive rights and hold New Hampshire Republicans accountable.

“If given the chance… New Hampshire Republicans will continue to try and push even more extreme, anti-choice policies and abortion bans in New Hampshire, and Republicans running for Congress and Senate will continue to double down on their fringe, anti-choice platforms. This is why we must continue doing everything we can to elect Democrats up and down the ballot who will defend our reproductive rights and hold every single Republican accountable who will try to take them away.”

  • In North Carolina, NCDP Chair Bobbie Richardson released a statement alongside Planned Parenthood Votes South Atlantic Executive Director Alison Kiser and NARAL Pro-Choice NC Advocacy and Organizing Manager Lynne Walter calling out the entire Senate Republican primary field for stopping at nothing to undermine reproductive rights.

“Today’s arguments mark the most significant threat to Roe v. Wade in decades and confirm once again what we already know — Republicans will stop at nothing to undermine people’s rights to make fundamental decisions about their bodies, families, and futures.”

  • In Ohio, ODP Chair Elizabeth Walters reminded voters that Ohio Republicans are trying to ban abortion and insert themselves in a decision that should be between Ohioans and their doctors.

“Ohio Republican politicians at every level are trying to ban abortion and insert themselves in a decision that should be between Ohioans and their doctors. In 2022, Ohioans will hold Republicans accountable as they continue to relentlessly attack Ohioans’ rights and put their health and safety at risk.”

  • In Pennsylvania, PA Dems reinforced the importance of electing a Democratic senator who will protect Roe v. Wade.

“It’s clear that choice is on the ballot in 2022, and electing a Democratic Senator from Pennsylvania is a critical step to prevent Republicans from putting more anti-choice justices on the court.”
