DSCC spokesperson Stewart Boss issued the following statement on reports that unemployment claims increased to 1.1 million this past week while Senate Republicans block an extension of emergency unemployment relief:
“Millions of Americans are going without the federal relief they and their families relied on because Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans let it run out last month — and instead of taking action, they went on vacation. They could have acted to help alleviate the financial strain Americans face and worked with Democrats to pass a relief bill that fully extended unemployment benefits, which the House of Representatives did in May. Instead, Senate Republicans wasted weeks bickering among themselves and insisted they didn’t see ‘a big need’ to extend emergency unemployment relief. Voters won’t forget that in the middle of a public health and economic crisis getting worse, Republicans in the Senate chose to take a vacation for the rest of August instead of working to deliver relief.”
Are Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans still blocking urgently needed relief? Yes.
