On day one of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearings for President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee who is hostile to the Affordable Care Act, the DSCC released a new video highlighting how the future of the health care law and protections for people with pre-existing conditions is at stake once again.
Senate Republicans are rushing to confirm Trump’s nominee in time for the Supreme Court to hear their party’s lawsuit to overturn the entire health care law, further increasing “the court’s chances of knocking down some or all” of the ACA. If their lawsuit is successful, it would eliminate protections for people with pre-existing conditions, kick an estimated 20 million Americans off their health insurance, end Medicaid expansion for at least 12 million people, and cut other health care benefits while giving the richest 0.1% a massive tax windfall.
Republicans know they are “trapped on pre-existing conditions,” which is why vulnerable senators and candidates are trying to “obscure their positions” on the issue with false and misleading ads and why the GOP is suddenly trying to downplay the risk their lawsuit poses to the popular health care law and its protections for people with pre-existing conditions. But the reality is, every single incumbent Senate Republican voted for the 2017 tax bill that set this lawsuit in motion, and the Trump administration is arguing in court that “every Republican who voted for the tax cuts three years ago knowingly voted to destroy” the entire health care law. Last week, Senate Republicans voted to allow the Department of Justice to intervene in support of the lawsuit, with some of the most vulnerable GOP incumbents casting a stunt vote in a desperate attempt to cover up their attacks on the ACA and protections for pre-existing conditions coverage.
“Republicans have spent the last decade trying non-stop to gut the ACA and its coverage protections for pre-existing conditions and now they are trying to ram through an anti-ACA nominee to push their toxic agenda in the Supreme Court,” said DSCC spokesperson Helen Kalla. “Americans know the only way to safeguard the health care protections they rely on is to flip the Senate and vote out every single one of these Republican senators who will never stop trying to take away their health care.”
