One-In-Five American Workers Unemployed as Senate Republicans “Praise” Trump’s Response

As Millions of Americans Lose Jobs, Health Coverage, GOP Vows to “Terminate Health Care

This Week, Republicans Also Moved Forward with Lawsuit to Eliminate Pre-Existing Conditions Coverage, Continued to Keep Special Enrollment Period Closed — Making It Harder for Newly Unemployed to Get Health Care

A day before it was reported that another 3.2 million Americans filed for unemployment claims — bringing the total number of unemployed Americans to 33.5 million, about one-fifth of the American workforce — Republicans in the Senate gave their own report of President’ Trump’s coronavirus response:

Seven weeks into this unprecedented spike in unemployment amid a public health crisis:

  • Senate Republicans are praising  and cheering the president despite the extensive evidence that shows the failure to prepare and respond has made the crisis worse, while also complaining they are getting “insufficient credit” from voters for passing emergency aid
  • Senate Republicans are declining to speak out against President Trump’s vow to “terminate health care
  • Senate Republicans are still unwilling to stand up to the administration to demand Trump open a special enrollment period for health coverage
  • Senate Republicans are still refusing to take meaningful action to stop the dangerous GOP lawsuit that moved forward this week and would overturn the entire ACA and wipe away all of its protections

“Senate Republicans could take meaningful action to help the millions of Americans who are losing their jobs – starting by making it easier for them to get health care coverage,” said DSCC spokesperson Stewart Boss. “Instead, they are focused on their own politics, celebrating a failing president because they think it will help their own reelections and refusing to hold him accountable for harmful policies. Their praise is out of touch with the struggles that millions of Americans are facing right now.”
