Ron Johnson Willing To Put National Security At Risk, Shut Down Department Of Homeland Security

Last Congress Johnson Repeatedly Voted For Government Shutdown, Even Opposed Ending Shutdown

Ron Johnson, Chair of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs committee, is eagerly allowing politics to trump national security by suggesting that a shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) wouldn’t hurt the department’s ability to keep America safe. However, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson recently explained why a DHS shutdown and their current budget situation is harmful to our nation’s security:

“…we cannot engage in new starts, new spending, new initiatives, new grants to state and local law enforcement to fund homeland security missions…We can’t do a lot of things for border security. Our counterterrorism efforts are limited.”

“Ron Johnson’s willingness to let partisan politics trump national security and shut down the Department of Homeland Security is shocking considering he’s supposed to be chairing the committee and working to protect this country,” said Justin Barasky, Communications Director at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. “The negative effects of a DHS shutdown would put our national security at risk at a time when our nation faces unprecedented threats, but Ron Johnson cares more about playing to his Tea Party base. Wisconsin voters deserve better than a Senator like Ron Johnson who will sacrifice national security simply to score partisan political points.”
