The blowback from Congressman Joe Heck and the NV GOP’s horrible week intensified over the weekend as the Republican’s campaign flailed and refused to apologize for insulting Catherine Cortez Masto’s heritage. To recap, in the span of 12 hours, former trusted aides of Congressman Heck questioned Cortez Masto’s Mexican heritage, even accusing her of “Hispandering.” Heck refuses to apologize but the aides have doubled down. A Nevada Republican party staffer then misidentified an African American state legislator in a photo with Catherine, confusing him for a different African-American elected official. And to top it off, Heck’s son’s shocking sexist, racist Reddit posts were discovered, many of which were so inappropriate they shouldn’t be re-written here. This is the second time Heck’s son has been caught posting inappropriate material online.
In a column yesterday, the comments of former Heck staffers were called “a sneering insult,” “nasty,” and “borderline racist” by Nevada journalist Jon Ralston. Another piece by Steve Sebelius in the Las Vegas Review-Journal referred to Joe Heck III’s social media posts as:
“an example of the ugliness that still lurks just beneath the surface of American life…It’s that ugliness that has been galvanized by some of the comments of Donald Trump, and spread by some of his fervent supporters.”
In reference to the comments by Heck’s former aides, Ralston points out that:
“not only has [Heck] not distanced himself from Trump, he has said he is fine with the erratic GOP nominee having access to the nuclear codes. This is Donald Trump’s America, where you can say almost anything you want about minorities, where an American judge of Mexican ancestry is smeared.”
“By continuing to support Trump, Congressman Heck is complicit in furthering Trump’s dark, divisive and offensive view of America and unfortunately for Nevada, that is showing up in Heck’s campaign,” said Sadie Weiner, DSCC Communications Director. “Congressman Heck should apologize for his aides and supporters who unleashed a nasty, personal attack on Catherine last week, but given that his Presidential candidate Donald Trump refuses to apologize for his bad actions, we won’t be holding our breath.”
