Senate Democrats once again delivered a better deal for Americans impacted by the coronavirus that includes more funds for small businesses, more resources for hospitals and a national investment in mass testing so we can safely reopen the economy. The big question is: why weren’t Republicans on board?
“Mitch McConnell and Republicans in the Senate again tried to shortchange struggling small businesses and hospitals and need to explain why,” said DSCC spokesperson Stewart Boss. “Without Senate Democrats, the program would have continued to exclude thousands of small businesses who need help now, hospitals and health care workers would not have gotten a dime, and there would be no investment in testing.”
Republicans have blocked efforts to fix the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) so community lenders and rural, women-owned, and minority-owned businesses can access this desperately needed aid. A new AP investigation today found that 75 large publicly traded corporations had received a combined $300 million in assistance through the PPP, while there are widespread reports of frustrated smaller businesses struggling to get support. Democrats also prioritized critical resources for testing so states can start to safely reopen their economies.
