Senator Burr Claims HB2 Won’t Hurt the Economy on the Same Day PayPal Cancels Planned Expansion

Local North Carolina businesses and major companies swiftly condemned North Carolina’s discriminatory law, known as HB2, but Senator Richard Burr shamefully defended the law, saying that it “does not discriminate.”

Now, Burr is doubling down on his support of the law, claiming that it will not hurt the North Carolina economy. Burr’s comments came on the very same day that PayPal announced it would cancel its previously-planned expansion into North Carolina, costing the state 400 jobs.

“Senator Burr’s claims about HB2 are completely wrong – it does discriminate and it is already hurting North Carolina’s economy,” said Lauren Passalacqua, DSCC National Press Secretary. “It is shameful that Burr won’t condemn the policy that is already hurting North Carolinians across the state.”
