Seven Weeks Later, Same Old Obstructionism from Senate Republicans

After a 7-week recess, Senate GOP once again plays politics with Zika health crisis, refuses to give Judge Garland a hearing

After leaving Washington seven weeks ago without taking action on a variety of public health and judicial priorities, Senate Republicans return to D.C. today committed to the same old partisan obstructionism that has already made this Senate the least-worked ever.

197 days since President Obama requested emergency funding to fight the Zika virus, and with now more than 2,700 confirmed Zika cases in the U.S., the Senate GOP will once again bring up an irresponsible and partisan bill tonight that underfunds response efforts and reduces vital services for women’s health.

And 175 days since the President nominated Judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court, Republicans will continue obstructing his nomination in order to hold a seat open for Donald Trump.

“Senate Republicans may be back in Washington today, but no one will be fooled into thinking they’re ‘back to work,’” said DSCC spokesperson Sam Lau. “It’s simply unconscionable that with Zika infections growing by the day, Republicans insist on playing politics with a public health crisis and will once again support legislation that restricts vital women’s health funding. And it appears that despite all of the hateful and divisive actions Donald Trump has taken over the past seven weeks, Senate Republicans continue to believe he has the judgment and temperament to select our next Supreme Court justice. Their continued commitment to partisan gridlock demonstrates why we need Democrats back in charge who will put working families first and halt this reckless obstructionism.”
