WATCH: DSCC Chair Sen. Gary Peters Joins MSNBC’s Morning Joe To Discuss Republicans’ Reckless Plan To “Hold The Country Hostage” And “Blow Up The Economy”

As Senate Democrats continue to hold committee hearings today on the true impact of Republicans’ reckless plan to default on America’s debts, slash hundreds of thousands of jobs and crash our economy, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chair Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) joined MSNBC’s Morning Joe to highlight that as Democrats are fighting every day to protect the American economy, the contrast is clear with Republicans, who are threatening to “hold the country hostage” and “blow up the economy.”

Watch for yourself:

DSCC Chair Sen. Gary Peters:

  • Default is catastrophic, if that occurs. We heard the Federal Reserve Chair say it’s unbelievable we’re even talking about a possible default as something that the United States would not pay its bills. It makes no sense.

  • Republicans are extracting a hostage here, which is the American economy. Should there be a default, people’s retirement savings are going to get hit, you’re gonna see increased interest costs for the taxpayers, as well as costs for mortgages and cars.

  • There should never be a discussion of default. It’s basically a default on the American people if the Republicans continue to go down that path. We’ve got to stand firm and make sure that that doesn’t happen.
  • We saw this movie play out last time the Republicans tried to hold the economy hostage. They added billions of dollars of additional interest costs, they actually increased the deficit because they’re playing with fire with the debt. It is simply unacceptable.
