DSCC spokesperson Helen Kalla released the following statement on the Washington Post’s bombshell story today that President Trump reportedly asked Chinese President Xi Jinping last year to help him win the 2020 election:
“Senate Republicans have spent a lot of money on phony TV ads claiming they’ve stood up to China when the record is clear that they haven’t. With new reports that President Trump was ‘pleading’ with the President of China to help him get re-elected, let’s see what those Republicans are willing to say now. We’re waiting.”
In April, the NRSC sent a 57-page leaked memo to GOP Senate candidates filled with talking points urging them to try and shift blame from Trump’s bungled coronavirus response and instead “attack China.” Facing tough re-elections, “politically endangered” Senate Republicans have followed that Washington playbook but have failed to hold either China or the president accountable.
