DSCC spokesperson Stewart Boss released the following statement on the Fifth Circuit ruling on the GOP lawsuit to end protections for pre-existing conditions coverage:
“Senate Republicans said they wouldn’t stop until they tore down protections for pre-existing conditions coverage and the other benefits that are a part of the health care law, and today’s ruling keeps that threat alive, putting consumer protections for Americans at risk.
“From Senator Susan Collins in Maine to Senator Martha McSally in Arizona, every single GOP incumbent has voted to repeal and sabotage the health care law, and then supported the reckless corporate tax giveaway that set this lawsuit in motion. Republican Senators will have to explain to voters for the next year why it was more important to side with their party leaders and special interest donors in Washington than stand up for their constituents’ health care.”
After years of voting to try to repeal the Affordable Care Act and gut its key protections, every Senate Republican voted for the 2017 tax bill that “sparked” this harmful lawsuit. Americans could lose guaranteed coverage for pre-existing conditions and other key benefits like maternity care coverage and children staying on their parents’ insurance until age 26.
Despite knowing for months that the lawsuit threatened to tear away coverage for as many as 20 million Americans, not one Republican Senator took meaningful steps to oppose it:
