While Democrats and Republicans alike have widely condemned Donald Trump’s racist attack on a Federal Judge, Richard Burr is sticking by his party’s standard-bearer because the offensive remarks are consistent with the other heinous things Trump has said. When asked to comment, Burr told reporters: “If they were inconsistent with things we’ve seen up to this point in the election, I would tell you it might. But I think we’re all sort of used to remarks being made that we don’t expect.”
Burr also said “it’s not my role” to ask Trump to retract his comments, though numerous other Senators have taken it upon themselves to do just that.
“Senator Burr’s defense would be funny, except he’s giving Donald Trump a pass on inexcusable comments,” said Lauren Passalacqua, DSCC National Press Secretary. “North Carolinians expect more of their Senator than acceptance of consistently offensive, racist remarks – especially from someone running for president.”
