DSCC, DCCC Joint Statement on Facebook Ad Announcement

Cortez Masto & Bustos:Facebook’s last minute changes will not prevent disinformation from being shared organically and still allow political campaigns to run ads with lies”

DSCC Chair Catherine Cortez Masto and DCCC Chair Cheri Bustos issued the following statement on Facebook’s announcement it will ban new political ads in the final week before the election:

“We believe and have said that big tech companies like Facebook must recognize the great responsibility they have and do a better job of stopping disinformation from spreading on their platforms, but their announcement today falls short of addressing this problem. Facebook’s last minute changes will not prevent disinformation from being shared organically and will still allow political campaigns to run ads with lies. At the same time, these changes will undermine efforts to ensure voters, particularly voters of color, who use Facebook as a resource can access accurate information – including when, where and how to cast their ballots. It’s disappointing and they must consider a more constructive and impactful approach that protects users without limiting civic engagement or campaigns’ ability to connect with voters.”
