DSCC Statement On Laxalt-Trump Rally

On Saturday, Donald Trump held a rally for Adam Laxalt and “boasted that ‘the largest crowd I’ve ever seen’ was January 6.” The dangerous remarks come as Senator Cortez Masto is highlighting Laxalt’s history of inspiring “the Jan. 6 insurrection that resulted in the deaths of five police officers,” saying that Laxalt’s embrace of the Big Lie is “unforgivable and Nevada will not forget his actions.”

From DSCC spokesperson Patrick Burgwinkle: “By fully embracing Trump’s toxic election lies, Adam Laxalt has repeatedly shown he is unfit to represent Nevada. Laxalt’s attacks on law enforcement are nothing short of disgraceful, and that’s exactly why voters will reject him once again in November.”

Nevada Current: At Nevada rally, Trump brags about size of crowd on January 6

  • During his address Trump said “You know the biggest crowd I’ve ever seen? January 6. And you never hear that.”
  • “Laxalt continues to embrace Trump and spread the Big Lie, even after inspiring a deadly attack on officers on January 6,” said Cortez Masto campaign spokesman Josh Marcus-Blank in response to the rally. “When given the choice, Laxalt stands with insurrectionists over law enforcement every time.”

Nevada Current: Cortez Masto slams Laxalt for inspiring Jan. 6: ‘It is unforgivable’

  • Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto went on the offensive Thursday, holding a campaign event to highlight her challenger’s connection to election denialism and the Jan. 6 insurrection that resulted in the deaths of five police officers.
  • “(Laxalt) has an extreme agenda that he is trying to hide and play safe,” said Cortez Masto… “He can’t do it because I’m not going to let him.”
  • That conspiracy theory “absolutely fueled” the mob that stormed the capital building on Jan. 6, 2021 in hopes of disrupting the procedural process of accepting certified election results from all states, said Cortez Masto, who characterized the event a danger to democracy.
  • “He’s continuing to do it. Already (he’s) calling out if he loses it’s because there’s wholesale election fraud in this state,” she went on, referring to comments Laxalt has made to conservative media about preparing for election lawsuits early.
  • “He continues to peddle conspiracies and lies. It is dangerous and people see it.”
  • The Jan. 6 insurrection contributed to the deaths of five capitol police officers and four people in the crowd. One officer, Brian Sicknick, was physically attacked by the mob. Four other officers died by suicide in the days and weeks after. Dozens of other officers were injured.
  • “He said nothing,” said Cortez Masto of Laxalt. “Five police officers died. And Adam Laxalt said nothing.”
  • “Laxalt could not bring himself to show an ounce of remorse for his actions,” said Cortez Masto. “It is unforgivable and Nevada will not forget his actions.”

Las Vegas Sun: Senate candidates tout law enforcement bone fides in final weeks of race

  • Five people, including a Capitol Police officer, were killed in the violence after a rally led by Trump, who was later impeached for inciting an insurrection.
  • For Cortez Masto, the memory of that officer washing his eyes out and immediately returning to confront the ongoing insurrection remains top-of-mind, even more than a year and a half afterward.
  • “I have always stood for our police. That’s why on Jan. 6, it was such a dark day for all of us,” Cortez Masto said. “The insurrectionists, they attacked our police officers, they attacked our Capitol, and it made me sick. Not just sick, it made me angry.”
  • It was Laxalt who filed multiple lawsuits for the campaign in Nevada over the election results, with false claims of voter fraud. All of the suits were dismissed and no irregularities were found.
  • But election deniers like Laxalt helped fuel the extremist supporters to take action Jan. 6, said Cortez Masto, who spoke at a local Teamsters Union hall in downtown Las Vegas with a backdrop of seven officers in the Nevada Association of Public Safety Officers.
  • The union, which claims it is the “largest affiliation of AFL-CIO law enforcement Associations” in the state, has endorsed Cortez Masto, as have the Nevada Police Union and the Nevada Law Enforcement Coalition.

  • Trump said the Jan. 6 crowd, which turned into a melee where the U.S. Capitol was stormed in an attempt to stop certification of Biden’s victory, was “massive” and “the biggest crowd I’ve ever seen” and that the media intentionally didn’t show how big it was.
  • “They were there largely to protest the corrupt and rigged and stolen election,” Trump said of his supporters. “It’s the biggest crowd and you never hear that.”
  • The Cortez Masto campaign centered on that comment, sending out a statement tying her opponent to it.
  • “Laxalt continues to embrace Trump and spread the Big Lie, even after inspiring a deadly attack on officers on January 6,” the email said. “When given the choice, Laxalt stands with insurrectionists over law enforcement every time.”
