FACT CHECK: Mitch McConnell Bragged About Recruiting Republican Larry Hogan to Run for U.S. Senate

In an interview with MSNBC Live’s Luke Russert, Republican Larry Hogan lied about Mitch McConnell’s well-documented, central role in recruiting him to run for Senate.

See for yourself:

  • The Hill: Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) worked hard behind the scenes to recruit popular former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) to run for retiring Sen. Ben Cardin’s (D-Md.) seat and hailed his entry into the race Friday as a “big, big development.”
  • The Washington Post: National Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.), again recruited Hogan this year.
  • Bloomberg: At the Capitol, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell called Hogan “a proven winner” who he had recruited to run in a series of conversations over the last week and crucial recruit for the party.
  • The Baltimore Banner: Democrats seized on reports that Republican leader Sen. Mitch McConnell recruited Hogan to run.

  • The Wall Street Journal: Both McConnell and Daines talked to Hogan in recent weeks, a person familiar with their conversations said.

  • Roll Call: McConnell’s behind-the-scenes push to convince Larry Hogan to jump into Maryland’s open Senate seat also yielded fruit last week when the popular former governor entered the race.
