As the 2023 elections showed, the Republican agenda of taking away women’s freedom to make their own medical decisions remains toxic with voters. 

Across the Senate battlegrounds, Republican candidates are already on the record and on tape touting their dangerous policies, like a national ban on abortion without exceptions. 

Here are the facts:

ARIZONA:

  • Kari Lake recently said her views on abortion “haven’t changed actually.” Lake supports “draconian” bans on abortion without exceptions for rape or incest. Lake has called abortion an “execution,” “the ultimate sin,” and said “I’m 100% pro-life and I’d like to see, I’d like to see no abortions…” [ABC15 11/1/23; Newsmax 5/5/22; KTAR 5/11/22; Calvary Oro Valley 12/7/21]

  • Mark Lamb said he would protect “all stages of human life, from conception to natural death” and celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Lamb also shared a post that read “Imagine If You Were Able To Kill Someone Who Was An Inconvenience To You & Get Away With It… Oh Yeah It’s Called Abortion.” [Issues, Mark Lamb for Sheriff, Captured 10/10/16; Instagram, @Americansheriff, 6/24/22; Twitter, @JessPish, 5/5/22]

FLORIDA: 

  • Rick Scott supported a six-week abortion ban, saying “I am 100% pro-life and if I was still governor, I would sign this bill.” Scott also cosponsored a national abortion ban in 2021. [The Hill 4/13/23; S.61 1/27/21]

MICHIGAN:

  • Mike Rogers backed a dangerous abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest, co-sponsored and voted for anti-choice bills that would have criminalized and banned abortion, and said he supported the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade. [The Gander, 10/19/23; WMUR 5/5/23]
  • Peter Meijer supports a national abortion ban and opposes exceptions for rape and incest. In Congress, Meijer voted against the Women’s Health Protection Act. [The Detroit News, 5/25/22]
  • James Craig said he would do “whatever I can” to keep Michigan’s draconian 1931 abortion ban that made no exceptions for rape or incest and criminalized doctors and nurses. [Michigan Advance 9/22/21]

MONTANA:

  • Matt Rosendale cosponsored legislation that would ban abortion and common forms of birth control, and he said the Dobbs decision, “finally redressed a grievous wrong.” [H.R. 1011, 2/11/21; FactCheck.Org, 8/15/14; Breitbart, 6/7/23; NARAL, 6/1/23; Twitter, @RepRosendale, 6/24/22]

  • Tim Sheehy referred to abortion as “murdering our unborn children.” [American Journal News 6/7/23 (AUDIO); HuffPost, 6/21/23]

NEVADA:

  • Sam Brown backed “one of the strictest anti-abortion measures in the country,” endorsed banning abortion without exceptions for rape or incest and led a national anti-choice group’s Nevada chapter. [The New York Times 7/13/13; iVoterGuide, Accessed 6/12/23; Las Vegas Sun 10/8/23]
  • Jim Marchant supported banning abortion without exceptions for rape or incest and said he believed in “legal protection at every stage” from conception. [Nevada Concerned Citizens, 2016; iVoterGuide, Archived 9/4/20]

OHIO:

  • Bernie Moreno supports a national abortion ban and does not support exceptions for rape, incest, or life of the mother. [Twitter, @American_Bridge, 8/11/23; Breitbart 10/1/21]

  • Frank LaRose supports a national abortion ban and opposes exceptions for rape or incest. [NBC News 8/9/23; POLITICO 7/17/23]

  • Matt Dolan said defeating the November Issue 1 amendment was a “priority” and has said he would vote for a national abortion ban. [Sandusky Register 4/28/23; The Columbus Dispatch 10/10/23

PENNSYLVANIA:

  • David McCormick supports banning abortion with no exceptions for rape or incest, self-describes as “staunchly pro-life,” and called the leaked Dobbs decision and eventual overturn of Roe v. TEXAS: 

  • Ted Cruz supported personhood legislation that would ban abortion and cosponsored a national abortion ban in 2021. [POLITICO 4/14/16; FactCheck.Org, 8/15/14; S.61 1/27/21]

WISCONSIN:

  • Eric Hovde is “100% pro-life,” and wants to protect life “from conception.” [WisPolitics 7/18/12; The Clarion 3/27/12]
