In light of Medicare’s 50th anniversary, this week the DSCC will hammer Republican Senators & candidates for their terrible records on Medicare. Our effort is called “GOP Medicare Memories” and will dive into their voting records, history of anti-Medicare statements, and feature a paid digital component on Facebook and Twitter as well as a fundraising push.
Below is today’s release. Similar releases targeting Senators in Missouri, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania will be sent today.
As the 50th Anniversary of Medicare approaches, the DSCC is highlighting the various ways in which vulnerable Republican Senators like Kelly Ayotte have sought to undermine and dismantle Medicare. It’s an election year, so Ayotte and these Senators are working to run as far and fast as they can from their records, but this week we’re shining a light on the votes they’ve cast and comments they’ve made that indicate how they really feel about the program that has allowed millions of Americans the chance to retire with dignity.
Just a few months ago, Ayotte joined a slew of vulnerable Republican Senators to vote against an amendment to strongly oppose privatizing Medicare or turning it into a voucher program. [Vote 90, 3/25/15] In New Hampshire, over 450,000 seniors and soon-to-be seniors could be impacted if Medicare were turned into a voucher program. [Census,2010; KFF, 2012; CBO, 9/13]
“Kelly Ayotte has voted to make Medicare a memory instead of a reality for countless Americans,” said Sadie Weiner, DSCC National Press Secretary. “Ayotte might sing a different tune during a tough election, but she laid bare her true agenda when she voted against protecting Medicare from privatization.”
