ICYMI: DSCC Vice Chair Sen. Tina Smith Discusses How Abortion is a “Defining Issue in The 2024 Elections,” Highlights DSCC Launch of GOPonAbortion.com

Sen. Smith: “This contrast between Senate Democrats and […] their Republican challengers could not be more clear”

Rev. Sharpton: “The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has taken direct aim at GOP Senate contenders with a new web campaign.”

Ahead of today’s anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, DSCC Vice Chair Sen. Tina Smith joined Rev. Al Sharpton on MSNBC’s PoliticsNation this weekend to discuss how abortion is “a defining issue in the 2024 elections” and the DSCC’s launch of GOPonAbortion.com, a website highlighting GOP Senate candidates’ own words and records which have “celebrated the ending of Roe vs. Wade [and] call[ed] for abortion bans.”

January 21, 2024

  • Rev. Al Sharpton: The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has taken direct aim at GOP Senate contenders with a new web campaign highlighting their comments on abortion ahead of key races, including several swing states. As I continue to ask ahead of November, Senator, is this the issue, reproductive rights, that will drive the Democratic base in 2024?

  • Sen. Smith: Abortion, reproductive freedom, is a defining issue in the 2024 elections and what the Senate Democrats did is we created a website that you can go and check out, GOPonAbortion.com, and you will see … what the difference is between Democrats and these Republican candidates on abortion. They all have celebrated the ending of Roe vs. Wade, they are all calling for abortion bans of one kind or another, none of them trust women to make their own decisions about health care including abortion.

  • Sen. Smith: So this contrast between Senate Democrats and between their Republican challengers could not be more clear. And we keep seeing over and over again what an important issue this is for voters who believe strongly that they should have the freedom to decide for themselves about what happens to their own bodies, including what happens with abortion in their lives. …I was thinking about the chaos and confusion and harm and just cruelty that has unfolded as state bans have taken effect. One in three women of childbearing age now live in states where abortion has been either banned or severely limited. …This all becomes part of the same issue that I know will be so important to all people as they vote come November.
