Says Trump could be “capable” leader
Refuses to call on Trump to recant his comments on immigrants
Instead of using his CNN State of the Union interview to establish his own narrative heading into what he has called the “race of my life,” John McCain instead exposed just how wedded he is to the party’s new presumptive nominee.
When pressed on whether he thought Trump was prepared to be president, McCain “defended Trump for being a strong and ‘capable’ leader, particularly on foreign policy.” In other words, McCain thinks that the man who wants to start a trade war with China, leave ISIS for Russia to handle, and ban all Muslims from entering the country, could be “capable” on foreign policy.
But the interview just went from bad to worse for McCain. Despite the fact that he was caught at a private fundraiser openly fretting about Trump’s impact on Arizona’s Hispanic voters, McCain expressly refused to call on Trump to apologize for comparing Mexican immigrants to rapists and criminals.
“It’s clear that Maverick McCain is nowhere to be found after three decades spent in Washington,” said Sam Lau, DSCC Spokesperson. “Despite claiming to have concern for Trump’s impact on Hispanic voters in his state, he can’t even bring himself to denounce Trump’s reprehensible comments on immigrants. It’s clear now that the only “capable” choice Arizonans have for Senate is Ann Kirkpatrick.”
As the Kirkpatrick campaign highlighted earlier this year in a Spanish-language advertisement, this is not the first time McCain has refused to stand up for the Hispanic community in his state. In classic Washington politician fashion, he’s tried to take nearly every side of the issue on the DREAM Act, and is now tying himself to Trump, whose disastrous immigration policies would tear families apart.
