IN THE STATES: GOP Senate Candidates Called Out For Anti-Choice Agenda On Anniversary Of Roe v. Wade

In response to the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Republican Senate candidates in key battleground states were called out for their toxic agenda on reproductive freedom and their ongoing efforts to try and strip away critical health care coverage from women and families – serving as a reminder that the right to choose is firmly on the ballot in 2022.

See for yourself:

In Arizona, the Arizona Democratic Party called on Mark Brnovich and Doug Ducey to state whether or not they support a proposed 6-week abortion ban after it was reported that the Arizona legislature will consider their own version of Texas’ draconian ban.

  • “This attempt to ban all legal abortions in Arizona is dangerous, abhorrent, and entirely unconstitutional. Republican politicians have gone too far in their attempts to implement their unpopular and reckless agenda. As Arizona’s head of state and chief prosecutor, Governor Ducey and Attorney General Brnovich must immediately share whether they would sign into law and enforce this legislation.”

In Colorado, the Colorado Democratic Party slammed GOP Senate frontrunner Ron Hanks for cosponsoring an extreme bill that would abolish all abortion in Colorado – on the same week of the anniversary of Roe.

In Georgia, the DPG reminded voters that Herschel Walker and the entire Georgia GOP Senate field support banning abortion – even in cases of rape or incest – and have pledged to support judges who would overturn Roe.

  • “Herschel Walker and the rest of the GOP Senate field have made it clear time and again that they’ll support every dangerous effort to undermine Roe v. Wade and strip away the rights of individuals and families to make their own personal health care decisions. It is clear that the stakes in 2022 for Georgia families couldn’t be higher — which is why Georgia Democrats will continue to do everything in our power to safeguard Georgians’ reproductive freedom and hold Republicans like Walker accountable for backing shameful abortion bans in Georgia and beyond.”

In Nevada, an op-ed in the Reno Gazette Journal slammed Adam Laxalt as “an anti-abortion extremist” who “has spent his whole political career working to limit access to abortion” – reeinforcing the importance of reelecting health care champion Sen. Cortez Masto.

  • Laxalt has spent his whole political career working to limit access to abortion. During his term as attorney general, he flouted the will of Nevadans and signed our state on to lawsuits that would dismantle reproductive rights and place undue burdens on women seeking abortions… Laxalt is campaigning as an anti-abortion extremist, which means our Senate race will determine the future of reproductive justice in Nevada and across the country.
  • As our senator, Catherine Cortez Masto has fought to protect a woman’s right to choose, helping lead the Women’s Health Protection Act to federally codify Roe. She actively fought against the Trump administration’s efforts to limit access to reproductive health care and worked to block federal court nominees who would roll back a woman’s right to choose. She stands with Nevadans of all political parties who believe women should have access to a full range of health care services.
  • The vast majority of Nevadans support women’s reproductive rights, but we must remain vigilant. If the Supreme Court overturns Roe, it would open up the door for a Republican Senate majority led by Mitch McConnell to pass federal legislation gutting abortion access. Adam Laxalt would help McConnell get there.

In New Hampshire, Republican Kevin Smith’s campaign launch was overshadowed by protesters slamming Smith for his extreme, anti-choice record that includes authoring his own abortion ban and calling to defund Planned Parenthood. New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley also issued a statement calling out GOP attacks on reproductive freedom.

  • “Abortion bans, ultrasound mandates, and defunding family planning centers do nothing but hurt Granite Staters — and yet, Chris Sununu, Chuck Morse, Sherman Packard, and every Republican in the State House or running for Congress or Senate continue to attack Granite Staters’ right to choose. That’s why we must fight back, elect Democrats this year who will fight to protect Roe v. Wade here in New Hampshire and throughout the country.”

In North Carolina, NCDP Chair Bobbie Richardson issued a statement holding North Carolina GOP Senate candidates accountable for their continued attacks on reproductive rights.

  • “Republicans from the state legislature to the U.S. Senate race continue to attack reproductive rights. North Carolina Republicans have proven their intention of stigmatizing abortion and restricting access to reproductive care time and time again. For the health and wellbeing of North Carolinians, we must change course… In 2022, North Carolina voters will hold Republicans accountable for their extreme, out of touch agenda at the ballot box.”

And the DSCC issued a statement emphasizing how GOP Senate candidates’ anti-choice agenda has put reproductive freedom squarely on the ballot in 2022.

  • “Today’s anniversary serves as a powerful reminder that the freedom for women to make our own health care decisions is firmly on the ballot this November. While Senate Democrats are committed to protecting access to reproductive care, Republicans’ attacks on Roe v. Wade and abortion access has put this issue front and center in the 2022 midterms — and for voters it will reinforce the stakes of protecting and expanding our Democratic Senate Majority with the power to confirm or reject Supreme Court justices.”
