What Did John McCain Think of Donald Trump’s Foreign Policy Speech?

Apr 27 2016

Senator John McCain previously called Donald Trump “uninformed and indeed dangerous” on foreign policy, but then doubled down on his support of Trump if he is the GOP presidential nominee.  Following Trump’s speech on foreign policy today, after which McCain’s close friend Lindsey Graham said that “Ronald Reagan must be rolling over in his grave,” Arizona voters deserve to know if McCain still thinks the candidate he’s ready to support for president is “uninformed” and “dangerous” on foreign policy.

“John McCain has repeatedly pledged to support toxic GOP candidate Donald Trump if he is the GOP nominee, even though he’s called out Trump’s reckless foreign policy positions,” said Lauren Passalacqua, DSCC National Press Secretary. “Following Trump’s speech today, McCain should tell Arizonans whether he still thinks the candidate he’s ready to support for president would be dangerous for our country.”

McCain: Donald Trump’s Statements On National Security Were “Uninformed” And “Dangerous.” “U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement today on the current debate on national security: ‘I share the concerns about Donald Trump that my friend and former Republican nominee, Mitt Romney, described in his speech today. I would also echo the many concerns about Mr. Trump’s uninformed and indeed dangerous statements on national security issues that have been raised by 65 Republican defense and foreign policy leaders.” [Office of Sen. McCain Spokeswoman Reiterated That McCain Would Support The Republican Nominee After He Released A Statement Calling Trump’s Views On National Security  “Uninformed” And “Dangerous.”  “John McCain followed Mitt Romney on Thursday in blistering Donald Trump, warning that voters should think ‘long and hard’ before making him commander in chief. ‘I share the concerns about Donald Trump that my friend and former Republican nominee, Mitt Romney, described in his speech today,’ said the Arizona senator and 2008 Republican nominee. ‘I would also echo the many concerns about Mr. Trump’s uninformed and indeed dangerous statements on national security issues that have been raised by 65 Republican defense and foreign policy leaders.’ […] Despite McCain’s words against Trump, he isn’t ruling out voting for him in November. ‘As Senator McCain has said, he will support the Republican nominee,’ a spokeswoman for the senator told POLITICO in an email later Thursday.” [Politico, 3/3/16]
