NEW DSCC AD: McSally Puts Even More Military Funds at Risk After Losing $30 Million for Arizona

Unelected Senator McSally voted to allow the president to raid money from Fort Huachuca, now she’s refusing to prevent another cash grab

Pentagon documents revealed that without funding, servicemembers at Huachuca will continue working in “‘unsafe’ facilities that ‘jeopardize personnel health, security and safety’

Following unelected Senator Martha McSally’s vote today to put even more funding for Arizona military construction projects at risk, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is launching a new digital ad campaign on Facebook holding her accountable for failing to stand up for Arizona’s military communities.

Unelected Senator Martha McSally first mistakenly announced that Arizona would lose just $30,000 — before having to correct herself by a factor of 1,000. Since then, McSally has “downplayed the move” and sidestepped mounting frustrations over $30 million in long overdue repairs at Fort Huachuca — without which, Pentagon documents reveal, servicemembers will have to keep working in “‘unsafe’ facilities that ‘jeopardize personnel health, security and safety.’” Now, the Washington Post reports that officials are again considering diverting even more funds away from military projects across the country.

“Senator McSally helped pave the way for this harmful raid on critical military construction funding, and she just voted again to uphold this bogus emergency declaration and allow the Trump administration to keep diverting money away from Arizona military communities,” said DSCC spokesperson Stewart Boss. “Even as the White House threatens to claw away even more money from Arizona, McSally is so craven that she voted to double down on enabling this reckless cash grab. Our new ad campaign will continue to hold unelected Senator McSally accountable for failing military communities and refusing to stand up for Arizona’s servicemembers.”

Read more about unelected Senator Martha McSally’s failure to put Arizona first:

  • Arizona Republic: “Republicans, including Sen. Martha McSally of Arizona, support the president’s national emergency declaration. As a result, 127 military construction projects will be scratched, delayed, or otherwise affected, including one in Arizona… McSally, who sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee, downplayed the move earlier this month.”
  • Tucson Sentinel: “The funding shifts – announced in a letter to lawmakers Tuesday and calls Wednesday to those who lost projects in their districts – sparked outrage from Democrats, many of whom accuse the president of robbing the military to feed his ego… McSally’s office originally wrote that the project was expected to cost just $30,000, but later sent out a correction.”
  • Washington Post: “Vehicle maintenance buildings at Fort Huachuca in Arizona date to the 1930s and 1940s and do not meet the Army’s standards for vehicle testing and maintenance, forcing service members to work in ‘unsafe’ facilities that ‘jeopardize personnel health, security and safety,’ the Army wrote in 2017.”
  • National Journal: “the Pentagon plans to defer $30 million in construction at the Ground Transport Equipment Building at Fort Huachuca, in Sen. Martha McSally’s home state of Arizona. McSally told reporters before the March vote that no funds would be transferred from projects in her state.”
  • HuffPost: “Sen. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.), one of those who voted in support of the declaration, announced early Wednesday that the Trump administration was diverting $30 million in funds from an Army base in her state to construction of the wall ― even though she previously received assurances from an acting secretary of defense that her state would be spared. The Arizona Republican, who is looking at a tough reelection fight next year, downplayed the move”
  • Associated Press: “endangered Republicans Cory Gardner of Colorado and Martha McSally of Arizona supported Trump in the earlier vote in March but stand to each lose funding for a home state project”

  • Daily Beast: “McSally, who was appointed to her seat, will have to deal with the loss of $30 million for an Army facility in southern Arizona to her constituents.”
