Perdue Claims He “Was Never Really a Repeal-and-Replace Guy.” Yes, He Was.

We’ve got the receipts to prove it.

In a new story published this week, Republican Senator David Perdue – facing re-election in Georgia in 2020 – told HuffPost: “I was never really a repeal-and-replace guy. I wanted to fix things.” Huh?

Across the country, panicky GOP Senate incumbents have been scrambling to update their talking points and rewrite their records of voting to repeal the Affordable Care Act and replace it with Republican plans to raise health care costs and gut protections for pre-existing conditions.

But this one takes the cake… and we’ve got the receipts to prove it →

June 2014: “I believe we must repeal & replace it”

August 2014: “RETWEET if you agree we need a Senator who will repeal and replace the Obamacare train wreck”

March 2015: “It’s time to REPEAL & REPLACE!”

June 2015: “Obamacare is a disaster and we must still work to repeal and replace it”

September 2016: “I will not give up the fight to fully repeal and replace this flawed law”

November 2016: “If we have the majority… we don’t need to compromise on one thing, that’s Obamacare… We repealed Obamacare this year without the Democrats. We can do it again early next year and it will become law — we will repeal it from law, because we’ll have a president that won’t veto it.”

March 2017: “We need to repeal ObamaCare and replace it”

September 2017: “three Republican Senate chairmen failed to support our efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare as we have all promised to do.”

May 2019: “I was never really a repeal-and-replace guy. I wanted to fix things”

If that last one feels like an absurd and disingenuous flip-flop – that’s because it is one. Senator Perdue’s sudden claim that he was “never really a repeal-and-replace guy” is as ridiculous and self-serving as it is false, and Georgia voters won’t be duped.
