Vulnerable Senate Republicans are bragging – again – about coronavirus relief measures that they opposed. Senators Susan Collins, Steve Daines, Joni Ernst, Kelly Loeffler and Martha McSally all highlighted the relief for hospitals and investment in a national testing program that if up to Republicans, would not have been in the most recent package. Democrats had to fight for fixes and more money for the small business loan program, as well as $75 billion for hospitals and health care workers, and $25 billion for testing needed to safely reopen the economy, while Republicans “resisted” funding these urgent needs.
It’s the latest example of how Republican Senators like Daines are misleading their constituents about their work on coronavirus benefits. Daines was caught misleading Montanans about his role securing an additional $600 in unemployment insurance but voted for an amendment that “that would have capped unemployment benefits and denied some people the extra $600.”
“Senators Collins, Daines, Ernst, Loeffler and McSally backed a plan that ignored hospitals, shortchanged small businesses and didn’t invest a dime in testing,” said DSCC spokesperson Helen Kalla. “Instead of misleading their constituents, they should explain why they didn’t think it was important to fund health care providers or invest in robust testing so we can safely reopen our economy.”
