Republican attacks on Americans’ health care are again in the spotlight as a vacancy on the Supreme Court raises the threat to protections for pre-existing condition coverage and women’s health care.
Republicans are already trying to use the courts to make protections for pre-existing conditions unconstitutional.
CNN: “The Trump administration’s efforts to undercut Obamacare’s health care protections for those with pre-existing conditions are the subject of a legal battle…the Supreme Court fight makes it easier for Democratic candidates to connect the courts to health care.”
Reminder: Josh Hawley (MO), Patrick Morrisey (WV) and Rick Scott’s (FL) Attorney General are all parties to the GOP’s lawsuit to make protections for coverage for pre-existing conditions unconstitutional. And no GOP Senate candidate has aggressively denounced the lawsuit.
Republicans are already preparing to launch new attacks on women’s access to health care.
NBC News: “The retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy, a swing vote who sometimes sided with his liberal colleagues on contentious social issues, sets up what is likely to be a bitter political fight over abortion heading into the fall midterm elections.”
Polling continues to confirm health care is a top issue for midterm voters – including two new surveys from the last few days:
The Kaiser Family Foundation found “overwhelming majorities said it’s important to keep the ACA’s protections for people with pre-existing conditions” – including 58 percent of Republicans.
According to Hart Research Associates, 66 percent of voters oppose the Trump Administration’s decision not to defend the health care law and to gut protections for pre-existing condition coverage. Forty-seven percent – nearly half of all voters – “strongly disapprove” of the lawsuit.
