Susan Collins Won’t Say If She’ll Vote for Trump, But She Supports His Agenda And Refuses To Condemn Trump Conspiracy Tweet

In Fear of Losing GOP Base, Senator Collins Refuses to Say If She Voted for Trump in Primary, If She’ll Write-In Someone Else in November As She Did in 2016

Senator Susan Collins has “repeatedly refused to say if she is backing Trump’s reelection bid” for 541 days and counting, but her record shows how she’s been an important Trump ally: just today, Collins refused to condemn Trump’s peddling of conspiracy theories about a 75-year-old peaceful protester who remains in the hospital after he was violently shoved to the ground by police. As the nation’s least popular senator faces the toughest election of her career, Collins’ record of voting with Trump 94 percent of the time and supporting his legislative proposals and judicial nominees reveal that despite her claims of independence, she’s a reliable vote for Trump:

  • Collins cast a key vote for the 2017 GOP tax bill that gave big corporations huge tax breaks, ballooned the deficit, and opened the door for the Republican lawsuit to tear down the entire Affordable Care Act, which would eliminate coverage protections for people with pre-existing conditions and Medicaid expansion.
  • Collins voted with Mitch McConnell 12 times against including key witnesses and evidence in Trump’s impeachment trial, before ultimately voting to acquit the president and insisting she thought he learned “a pretty big lesson” — a claim Trump himself refuted the very next day.

“Senator Collins doesn’t want to tell Mainers if she’s supporting Trump’s reelection but her record speaks for itself,” said DSCC spokesperson Helen Kalla. “By not being up front with voters, Senator Collins is once again showing how she’s changed after nearly 24 years in Washington, giving Mainers another reason to elect an independent voice who will put them first.”
