Weekly West Virginia “Battle Royale” Senate Primary Update

Continued attacks over Justice’s delay in filing his personal financial disclosure and barrage of financial scandals, pamphlets outside of Justice’s DC fundraiser, and more name-calling: here’s what you might have missed this week in West Virginia’s “messy,” “costly,” and “bruising” GOP primary.

• “Justice financial disclosure report delay focus of U.S. Senate campaign.” Justice failed to file his late Personal Financial Disclosure (PFD) by Saturday, September 23rd — the date he promised to file by — after missing the August 24th deadline. Mooney and his campaign “knock[ed]” Justice for “stretch[ing] out the filing process as long as he possibly could … even after a 90-day extension and a ‘grace period’.”
  

• Justice’s PFD — which was submitted 134 days after the original due date — “reveal[ed] extensive assets, minimal income, and mounting debt,” including tens of millions of dollars in liabilities. But the debts listed on Justice’s PFD don’t include “the additional tens of millions of dollars he owes in taxes, fees and penalties to states in which he does business or the federal government.” 

• Outside of Jim Justice’s fundraiser at the National Republican Senatorial Committee in DC this week, the DSCC handed out “What is Jim Justice Hiding?” pamphlets highlighting news coverage of Justice’s mounting financial, health, and transparency scandals that have taken center stage in West Virginia Republicans’ “battle royale” Senate primary. 

• Mooney attacked Justice as an “irresponsible” and “fairweather politician,” citing Justice’s “unpaid debts, taxes, and fines” and insisting that “West Virginians deserve to know the truth about Jim Justice and his family’s businesses.”
