Senator Susan Collins is once again making empty statements without taking “any immediate action” to demand witnesses testify even as President Trump pledged today to block former National Security Advisor John Bolton from testifying.
In what has become her standard operating procedure, the vulnerable incumbent will vote “vote the way Mitch McConnell and the Republicans in the Senate vote,” moving forward with a trial that does not include any “commitment to calling witnesses or admitting new evidence,” — something Senator Collins supported in 1998 and 1999 and was vocal about demanding as a part of the Senate process.
As WhatChangedSusan.com documents in statements, TV interviews and a joint op-ed with former Senator Olympia Snowe, Collins was once clear about her need for direct testimony and other evidence but is now silent even as the president has said he will prevent a witness with direct knowledge of his conduct from testifying. Instead, Senator Collins is ‘grousing’ about the scrutiny of her refusal to meet the standard she set two decades ago.
“Senator Collins has the power to demand witnesses with firsthand evidence like John Bolton are a part of the trial so that we can hear the facts, but instead she went along with McConnell and now the White House will prevent his testimony,” said DSCC spokesperson Stewart Boss. “Senator Collins is not being consistent and is falling short of the robust effort to uncover the truth that she once expected of the Senate.”
