What to Know About The “Fractured” AZ GOP Senate Primary & ‘Lackluster’ Brnovich

In response to Mark Brnovich’s entrance into Arizona’s “fractured” GOP Senate primary, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesman David Bergstein released the following statement:

“Brnovich’s announcement means Arizona’s Republican Senate primary will be nasty, expensive — and long. ‘Lackluster’ Brnovich has a long record of self-serving politics, and as the Republicans fight amongst themselves they’ll show Arizona voters why they can’t trust Brnovich or any other GOP candidate to represent their interests in the Senate.” 

Here’s what you need to know about the “fractured” AZ GOP Primary and politician Mark Brnovich:

• Arizona Republic: Trump lashes out against possible U.S. Senate candidate Mark Brnovich over election audit. “Former President Donald Trump lashed out against state Attorney General Mark Brnovich over his tepid support of the ongoing review of ballots in Maricopa County…Trump continues to insist widespread fraud in Maricopa County, once a conservative stronghold, was the only explanation for his 2020 loss to President Joe Biden.” 

• The Maricopa County “audit” will serve as a major “purity test” in this primary, further fracturing the Arizona GOP. President Trump’s near-singular focus on the ‘audit’ has created a “purity test” for GOP Senate candidates, even as “Republican county officials condemned the recount as a bizarre ‘grift.”

• The primary is gearing up to be expensive and long-running. One candidate is already up on TV, Peter Thiel has pledged to spend $10 million in support of another candidate, and Club for Growth has also hinted it’s ready to jump in to support Congressman Andy Biggs should he run. With no clear frontrunner, this race could last up to Arizona’s primary next August.  

• Arizonans called Brnovich a “partisan hack” because he abused his office and wasted taxpayer money for self-serving political gain, said he “descends into political absurdity” and his “transformation from independent…to partisan hack is complete.”

• Brnovich is leading the charge to repeal popular policies many Arizonans rely on like the Affordable Care Act. Brnovich is perhaps best known for standing in lockstep with Mitch McConnell and establishment Republicans’ efforts to gut health care coverage, wasting taxpayer dollars pursuing an expensive and failed lawsuit to cut protections for pre-existing conditions for Arizonans.
