Two years ago today, Senate Republicans introduced a proposal to repeal the Affordable Care Act’s coverage requirement as part of their corporate tax giveaway, laying the foundation for the toxic GOP lawsuit that threatens to end health protections Coloradans rely on. Senator Cory Gardner voted for this tax giveaway, helping spark the dangerous lawsuit that could end critical health care protections including pre-existing conditions coverage, maternity care, and allowing kids to stay on their parents’ insurance until age 26.
“When Republicans failed to tear down the health care law in Congress, Senator Cory Gardner complained that ‘donors are furious,’” said DSCC spokesperson Stewart Boss. “Then he turned around and helped pass a toxic tax giveaway that not only gave massive breaks to corporations and the wealthiest Americans, but also gave Republicans a new way to gut their constituents’ care. Senator Gardner has no plan to protect Coloradans with pre-existing conditions, but that hasn’t stopped him from backing every piece of his party’s reckless health care agenda.”
Senator Gardner said himself that taking away Coloradans’ health care was a “losing strategy,” but he proudly voted for the GOP tax giveaway — including the provision that turned it into a vehicle for Republicans’ toxic lawsuit to end pre-existing conditions protections. Gardner has refused to condemn the lawsuit, which could see a ruling any day, and “has yet to produce a specific plan” to protect Coloradans with pre-existing conditions — revealing why Gardner and vulnerable Senate Republicans have resorted to pushing sham bills that “don’t actually protect sick people” and trying to hide the fallout from this harmful lawsuit until after next year’s election.
The DSCC has been “laser focused” on holding Senator Gardner for his role in the GOP’s anti-health care lawsuit, running digital ads spotlighting his consistent failure to protect Coloradans’ care.
