Two years ago today, Senate Republicans introduced a proposal to repeal the Affordable Care Act’s coverage requirement as part of their corporate tax giveaway, laying the foundation for the toxic GOP lawsuit that threatens to end health protections Mainers rely on. Senator Susan Collins voted for this tax giveaway, helping spark the dangerous lawsuit that could end critical health care protections including pre-existing conditions coverage, maternity care, and allowing kids to stay on their parents’ insurance until age 26.
“Senator Susan Collins’ vote for this reckless tax giveaway is more proof that she answers to Mitch McConnell and not to Mainers,” said DSCC spokesperson Stewart Boss. “Despite the fact that the toxic health care lawsuit she helped trigger could gut Mainers’ health care protections, Collins has said she ‘would support it again today’ — making clear why Mainers can’t afford her toxic health care agenda.”
Senator Collins has defended her vote for this tax giveaway — despite the threat it poses to Mainers with pre-existing conditions — writing, “Let me be clear I… would support it again today.” Instead of working to protect coverage for the Mainers who stand to lose the most from Republicans’ toxic health care agenda, Collins was the deciding vote to block a study on the fallout from Republicans’ efforts to tear down the health care law.
The DSCC has been “laser focused” on holding Senator Collins accountable for her role in the GOP’s anti-health care lawsuit, running digital ads spotlighting her consistent failure to protect Mainers’ care.
