DSCC Statement On FL Legislative Session

Following the end of the Florida Legislative session, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Spokesman David Bergstein issued the following statement:

“Rick Scott’s legislative session was marred by the same wrong priorities that have defined his entire career: a reckless, single-minded quest to promote his own political interests — while working families are paying the price. Scott may have already been named a ‘loser’ of the session, but the sad truth is that it’s hardworking Floridians who are losing out as Scott’s self-serving agenda takes Florida to the bottom of the nation in household income.  At every turn Scott is proving that he’s a typical Tallahassee politician who is only ever looking out for one person: himself.”

Sarasota Herald-Tribune: LOSERS: Gov. Rick Scott. It’s rare to see a state’s chief executive so thoroughly ignored by members of his own party, but Scott leaves this legislative session with remarkably little to brag about.”

9 Investigates: Gov. Scott’s ad aimed at supporting Florida jobs not filmed in Florida. “Gov. Rick Scott has been fighting to keep Visit Florida funded through the state budget, going as far as filming an ad to push jobs in the state. That ad, though, wasn’t shot in Florida, Channel 9 learned.”

WFTV: Scott’s Political Cronies “using your tax dollars to help fund their business expansion.” “The governor paid for this ad with his political committee, Let’s Get To Work. But we dug even deeper, and discovered that some of the same companies that were giving campaign cash to Governor Rick Scott’s Let’s Get To Work committee are the same companies who have active contracts with Enterprise Florida. Meaning they’re using your tax dollars to help fund their business expansion.”

Corcoran: Gov. Rick Scott failing to help Florida House protect consumers. “Did you know that Florida’s businesses and homeowners are facing hundreds of millions of dollars in insurance rate hikes and tax increases? These increased costs threaten our state’s economy and your job…Gov. Rick Scott has been indifferent at best on these issues.”

Orlando Sentinel Editorial: Who’s on first in Tallahassee? Personal agendas, not Florida voters. “Republican Gov. Rick Scott went AWOL, departing for Argentina on a four-day trade mission. His staff argues that the Legislature understands Scott’s priorities, but a serious governor wouldn’t leave town at this point of the session for anything but an emergency… Voters who send legislators to Tallahassee with the promise of getting things done are justifiably frustrated. Property and auto insurance remain too expensive. Traditional public schools, which the vast majority of students attend, keep getting bled of money, and teachers are fleeing. The state prison system is a mess. Mental-health care is underfunded… All these Tallahassee players are thinking about how to run for higher office. How about if they show that they can do something good in the offices they hold now?”

Palm Beach Post: Editorial: Scott’s $100-million bid for Visit Florida misses the mark. “The move is pure Rick Scott. It defines job creation as almost the sole priority for Florida. And it goes about that goal in a dubious way. As we’ve said before, a well-run Visit Florida is a good thing, but this state needs more than the low-wage service jobs typical of the tourism industry. We need to invest in education to attract the high-paying opportunities connected with the knowledge economy.”
