This week marks two years since Senate Republicans pushed their tax scam through Congress, and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is keeping a spotlight on how the GOP’s deeply unpopular legislation put corporate special interests and the wealthiest Americans ahead of hardworking families.

Of all the problems with Republicans’ tax scam, few are as egregious as the tax hike on Gold Star families. While the giant corporations got a massive tax break — which they promptly sank into stock buybacks — the families of servicemembers killed in combat faced a shocking penalty in the form of “much higher taxes on survivor benefits.” Until Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans fix their tax giveaway, Gold Star families will be left paying the price.

“In their irresponsible rush to slash taxes for billionaires and giant corporations, Senate Republicans managed to impose a cruel penalty on families across America who have lost a loved one in military service,” said DSCC spokesperson Stewart Boss. “Republicans’ tax hike on Gold Star families is a disgraceful sign of just how far they’ll go to please their wealthy donors and special interest allies in Washington — regardless of the pain it causes for their constituents.”
