Rather than work across the aisle to avoid a default crisis, Congressman Joe Heck today cast a reckless vote for a “Pay China First” plan that would put vital programs in jeopardy by putting payments to China ahead of payments for programs that benefit our servicemembers, veterans, small businesses, students and Medicare beneficiaries. Economists on both sides of the aisle have explained that this arrangement would be the same as a default, with a former Bush economist suggesting it would be “the first step to becoming a banana republic.”
With today’s vote, Congressman Heck made it clear that he would rather play partisan games that bring into question the full faith and credit of the United States than work on real solutions to simply stop a default crisis. The Treasury Department has set November 3 as the deadline for stopping this catastrophe, and with every day that passes without a solution, Congressman Heck is drawing us closer to the brink.
“Congressman Joe Heck is a key vote for the Republican leadership’s plan to govern by crisis, and less than a month after bringing us to the eleventh hour of a government shutdown over Planned Parenthood, it comes as no surprise that Congressman Heck is once again putting partisan games ahead of bipartisan common-sense solutions,” said Sadie Weiner, DSCC Communications Director. “Congressman Heck should be ashamed that he would prioritize payments to China over programs that support our veterans, students and Medicare recipients, and Nevadans deserve better than someone who would put our economic stability in jeopardy just to score political points.”
