Missouri Senate ABCs: Andy Blunt’s Conflicts of Interest

“The Blunts are deeper into these conflicts of interest than any other family on Capitol Hill”

Senator Roy Blunt’s deep lobbying ties made state and national news this week with a new look at how his son Andy is managing his father’s reelection campaign while continuing his work as a registered lobbyist. His more than 35 clients include Exelon, the University of Missouri and the Missouri Cable Telecommunications Association, which just named Andy its executive director. Senator Blunt sits on the subcommittee with oversight of the telecommunication industry, and has publicly commented on issues related to both Exelon and the University of Missouri.

And while Senator Blunt wouldn’t respond to reporters’ inquiries – saying to one “I thought you were told I wasn’t going to talk about this” – an ethics watchdog confirmed that the “Blunts are deeper into these conflicts of interest than any other family on Capitol Hill.”

Here are some of the headlines:

St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Andy Blunt says there’s no conflict between his lobbying and running his father’s campaign

Kansas City Star: Andy Blunt insists there’s no conflict of interest

Springfield Business Journal: Andy Blunt: No conflict between lobbying work, father’s Senate campaign

Politico: Blunt combines lobbying, campaign managing in Missouri

National Journal: Blunt’s Son Sees No Conflict of Interest Between Lobbying and Running Father’s Campaign

“Just because the Blunts say ‘there’s nothing to see here,’ doesn’t make it true – and the web of the influence rightly raises questions,” said Lauren Passalacqua, DSCC National Press Secretary. “Senator Blunt is actively working on issues that his son lobbies on – while his son also runs his father’s campaign – and that should concern Missourians who already wonder who their senator is really working for.”
