The Senate Republicans who sided with Mitch McConnell to move forward with sham trial rules that do not include any “commitment to calling witnesses or admitting new evidence” have more explaining to do: Why do they think it was appropriate for McConnell to meet with the president to discuss the impeachment trial?
Every Republican Senator, including vulnerable incumbents Martha McSally, Cory Gardner, Susan Collins, and Thom Tillis are backing McConnell’s sham trial process with no guarantees for witnesses despite the fact that “bipartisan majorities” including many Republicans and independent voters in battleground states like Arizona, Colorado, Maine, and North Carolina want to see a fair hearing with witness testimony.
“Every Republican Senator and especially those on the ballot like Gardner, Collins, McSally and Tillis should explain why they think it’s appropriate for Mitch McConnell to meet with the president behind closed doors to coordinate strategy on trial rules,” said DSCC spokesperson Stewart Boss. “They’ve already ignored their responsibilities to ensure a full and fair process, and are now standing by while another member of the jury conspires with the defendant.”
