New Poll: Panicked McCain in “Deep Trouble” in Arizona

Has 35/50 Approval Rating with GOP Voters

Ties Kelli Ward in GOP Primary

After a disastrous week where McCain linked himself indelibly to Donald Trump, his campaign has already showed signs of true panic. They not only released a memo this week to “dampen any anxiety among supporters,” they also launched paid advertisements against both his Democratic challenger Ann Kirkpatrick AND his main GOP primary opponent, Kelli Ward.

A new PPP poll released today finds that their panic is well-founded.

McCain is vastly unpopular in Arizona, even within the Republican party. Only 35% of Arizona GOP voters approve of the job he’s doing, compared to 50% who disapprove, and despite near universal name recognition, McCain would TIE Kelli Ward in a two-person GOP primary race. .

If McCain were to survive his primary election, he would then have to face a general electorate in Arizona where his approval ratings are underwater by 18 POINTS—34/52, and his lead over Kirkpatrick is just 6 points.

“After decades in Washington, it’s clear that Arizonans—including Arizona Republicans—believe John McCain has changed and no longer represents them,” said DSCC spokesperson Sam Lau. “Now his campaign is panicking and forced to attack his primary opponent to try and save face. But with McCain continuing to refuse to stand up to Donald Trump, this marks just the beginning of his campaign’s bad news.”
