Donald Trump has spent days trying to walk back his despicable statement that women who receive abortions should be punished – but he’s not walking too far. Trump would still outlaw abortion, criminalize the doctors who perform the procedure, and endanger women’s health. This isn’t new territory for the Republican Party and Senator Kelly Ayotte is among those who agree with Trump and the GOP that abortion should be outlawed – a position that would cause doctors who participate in the medical procedure to be treated like criminals.
Here’s a question for Senator Ayotte: how would you punish doctors?
“Donald Trump’s put a spotlight on one of the GOP’s most out-of-touch platforms: overturning Roe v. Wade and criminalizing abortion – a dangerous prospect that would put women and families across America at risk,” said Lauren Passalacqua, DSCC National Press Secretary. “Senator Ayotte, who has already vowed to support Trump should he become the Republican presidential nominee, so should let Granite Staters know exactly what ‘punishment’ she’d levy against women’s doctors.”
KELLY AYOTTE: “CERTAINLY” ROE V. WADE “SHOULD BE OVERTURNED”
Ayotte Said That She “Certainly” Thought That “Roe Should Be Overturned.” MODERATOR: “Would you sponsor an amendment banning abortion or overturning Roe v. Wade in your first term as a senator?” AYOTTE: “Well, I certainly think that Roe should be overturned, but I think that has to be done in the United States Supreme Court.” [North Conway GOP Senate Primary Debate, 8/19/10]
