VIDEO: Larry Hogan Refuses to Support Codifying Roe and IVF Protections, Plans to Caucus with Republicans

In case you missed it, today at an Axios event, Larry Hogan:

  • Refused to say he would support federal legislation codifying protections for IVF.
  • Refused to say he would support codifying Roe. When pressed for a “yes or no” answer, Hogan giggled saying “no, it wasn’t a yes or a no.”
  • Reminded voters that he is fully committed to caucusing with Republicans – saying “of course I am” when asked.

In response, DSCC spokesperson Amanda Sherman Baity issued this statement: “Republican Larry Hogan just reminded voters why he has no place representing them in the Senate: just like the most extreme MAGA Republicans, he won’t protect women’s right to make their own decisions about their health care and their families – and if he was elected, he’d turn the Senate over to Republicans so they can pass a national ban on abortion. That’s a disqualifying agenda for Maryland voters.”

Axios: Larry Hogan doesn’t commit to federal IVF protections

By Stephen Neukam

  • Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R), running for Senate in the state, would not commit Thursday to voting for federal IVF protections.
  • Hogan also wouldn’t commit to supporting legislation to codify Roe v. Wade into federal law, a move that is deeply unpopular among many Republican lawmakers.
  • When pressed on if his answer was a yes or no, Hogan said: “That wasn’t a yes or no.”
  • The big picture: Abortion access is a top issue in the 2024 campaign, with Republicans still struggling to find a consistent message after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

Axios’ Sophia Cai: Would you vote for federal legislation protecting IVF?

Larry Hogan: But I, I don’t know if I want to speculate what legislation might come up… I don’t know that that’s ever going to come up. And I don’t want to speculate on what the legislation might look like.

Sophia Cai: Would you vote to codify Roe into federal law?

Hogan: I think that’s what we’re going to have to take a look at that as we move forward.

Sophia Cai: So is that yes?

Hogan: Whether it’s needed or not.

Sophia Cai: Yes or no?

Hogan: No, it wasn’t a yes or no.

Sophia Cai: Very clearly it wasn’t.

[Hogan laughter]

Sophia Cai: All right. All right. We’ll move on.

Sophia Cai: Well are you, are you going to caucus with the Republicans?

Hogan: Of course I am. I’m a lifelong Republican.
